Mud mat installation analysis

Mud mat installation analysis

Overview

Jee was engaged to assess the feasibility of installing a FOTO structure with an integrated mud mat, under offshore environmental conditions characterised by a 2-metre significant wave height.

To support this evaluation, Jee used OrcaFlex to simulate the installation process and analyse the structure’s dynamic behaviour during deployment. The mud mat was modelled at a 45-degree inclination to the horizontal plane, a design choice intended to reduce dynamic loading as the structure passed through the wave zone.

Solution

A series of OrcaFlex simulations were conducted to explore multiple installation scenarios and determine maximum and minimum sling loads. The analysis considered key variables, including:

  • Vessel Motion vs Fixed Boundary Conditions
The influence of vessel dynamics was compared against static conditions to assess their impact on load distribution.
  • Sling Load Behaviour
Under expected operating conditions, results confirmed that the mud mat installation would remain stable.

However, the study also identified the need for more refined crane tip motion modelling to accurately quantify sling loads driven by vessel movement.

This project demonstrates how Jee’s advanced subsea engineering capabilities are applied to enable safe, efficient, and technically robust installations in challenging offshore environments.

By leveraging a broad suite of analytical tools, Jee delivers tailored solutions that mitigate risk and optimise performance across the asset lifecycle.

As the offshore energy sector evolves—particularly with the shift toward renewables—Jee continues to adapt its expertise to meet emerging demands. With decades of cross-sector experience, the company is well-positioned to support the design, analysis, and installation of next-generation infrastructure, from fixed and floating wind to subsea power cables and beyond.
