All Energy: a young engineer’s perspective

All Energy: Scotland’s largest conference of industry professionals, academics and pioneers was an opportunity for Jee’s young engineers to gain valuable insight to the state of the energy sector as we navigate towards net zero. Jee, having vast amount of industry experience from years in the energy sector, are on the front line of innovating new engineering solutions to help achieve this and hearing first hand from other partners in industry on the issues they are experiencing is a vital way to integrate into this new world.

Key challenges to overcome

Floating offshore wind (FOW) and hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen, present major opportunities for the UK’s future but also face some key challenges. FOW offers the opportunity to access greater energy yields, and the UK leads in early deployment. However high costs, lack of infrastructure, supply chain gaps and scalability remain barriers. Green hydrogen production from various electrolysis methods using renewables offers an energy source. Hydrogen can be used to overcome the seasonal intermittency that affects other renewables as it offers additional long term storage capabilities that can be used to meet higher energy demands at times of lower output. However, production remains expensive and significant investment into storage and transport will be required. Both technologies are crucial to UK net zero goals and with the appropriate innovation and scaling will be extremely impactful.

Key lessons learned

Now, more than ever, skills and expertise gained from decades of oil and gas subsea engineering can greatly accelerate innovation in the floating offshore wind sector. This is especially evident for dynamic cable applications and mooring lines, as stated in a seminar by Dave Brooks from SUT. One key issue faced by offshore floating wind is the mechanisms that lead to cable failure which Jee can has previous experience of addressing by leveraging its 10+ years of experience in offshore wind and decades of experience of offshore facilities. A key example of Jee’s expertise includes having successfully performed array cable risk-based assessments and analyses for the wind sector. This provided previous clients with a clear understanding of likely cable risks and bring down costs by avoiding unnecessary remediation and additional survey expenditure.

Jee’s involvement towards net zero

With over 30 years of engineering experience, Jee has continued to adapt in an ever-changing energy sector whilst always ensuring a customer focused approach. We at Jee have been part of many renewable energy projects including:

  • Successful concept stage mooring line design and analysis which ensured cost effective solutions that properly considered the technical challenges and risks for the client
  • Development of essential integrity management systems of renewable technology such as FOW cables to bring down remediation and survey costs
  • Lifetime extension studies of subsea components to ensure that maximum utilisation is achieved to get maximum returns for the client

As the UK and beyond works toward net zero goals, utilising Jee’s expertise will be a keyway to aid in the issues the future energy sector will need to overcome.
