From Graduate to Engineer 1 at Jee

Our graduate Cameron Gerrie has been with us for a year and was recently promoted to Engineer 1. Here’s what he has to say about his experience as a graduate at Jee.

Motivation to join:
Jee’s role in the energy transition and its consultancy expertise are big motivations for me. Working at a consultancy means tackling specialised high impact projects that go beyond in-house capabilities.

Work environment:
Being able to work on a variety of engineering projects and connect directly with other engineers is a huge benefit. The prospect of tackling complex challenges with top engineering experts is highly motivating.


Initial impressions:
I have learnt that projects often involve gathering large amounts of data from clients and carefully applying data-driven estimates when certain information isn’t available. I have enjoyed working on the more technical aspects of projects such as corrosion modelling and performing span assessments. The engineers I work with offer great support, explaining the rationale behind decisions and guiding me through the process. While I enjoy their support, I am also given the freedom to use my initiative to solve problems, learn to use complex calculation sheets and come up with adjustments.

Learning and growth:
I have gained valuable insights into the areas of pigging and lifetime extension, which were not covered during my years at university. This experience broadened my understanding of pipelines and strengthened my skills in performing risk assessments as well as furthering my understanding of corrosion and other failure mechanisms of pipelines.

Looking ahead:
I aim to continue working on a variety of projects, with a greater focus on integrity management over pigging. I am also keen to get involved with design and renewable energy projects as much as possible and develop my expertise in technologically complex projects such as finite element analysis.

Recommendation:
The work environment here at Jee is exceptionally supportive, with engineers always willing to offer help and learning opportunities arising from the variety of projects, especially as Jee expands into the renewable energy market.

Support:
The support that stands out the most is when the engineering team comes together to discuss challenges and explore solutions collaboratively, even if the immediate answers aren’t available. This approach has helped me develop a more adaptable and problem-solving mindset.

Memorable experiences:
The project that I have enjoyed the most so far involved performing a lifetime extension for multiple risers transitioning to CO2 storage. It offered me the chance to learn about the unique challenges with transporting CO2 and the potential for reusing existing infrastructure. I conducted research into CO2 transport standards, to update Jee’s approach to lifetime extensions, to address these new challenges and refine the related calculation models.
